Leatherettt Magazine by Brent Lawson

The Big TEN publishing company ceased production of 14 historic custom car print magazines-therefore leaving the once well-documented history of automotive subculture to find cultural relevance of its own. We created this issue in part, to help document the last remaining images of the 90’s and 00’s automotive subculture available on the internet..With the Fast & the Furious franchise closing out, we foresaw an opportunity to help its original founding fathers--and mothers, share their stories of what made building a car during this time so importatnt. To compliment our efforts in unearthing stories from the past, we created a digital car to bring its historical relevance into the now and into the future. If we don’t understand where we come from, how can we really move forward?

By taking matters into our own hands, Boki, Verone, Filip and Haow of 2000’s Tuning collaborated with Brent Lawson to produce a digital car that evoked our feelings, emotions and interests in 2000’s tuning styles. The result ended in the build of a few digital cars representative of the servers’ interests in automotive subculture. Brent brought a new queer perspective upon the identity of a modern car culture using historic information. Whether it’s our “Rope Bunny” Acura Integra with a Nissan Silvia front end and a Subaru WRX rear end, or the 240SX built for show and track- there are overarching themes of gender performance and identity in which we hope to continue to work around to usher in a new era of modern automotive enthusiasm.

What is unique about our community is our dedication to using historical information to create digital compositions of real-world cars. Unlike many other digital artists who create compositions based on speculation, we scour the internet for archives found on Wayback Machine, Twitter, and semi-broken web forums to inform how we approach creating truly period-correct digital comps.
